About Us

TIENXI is a project led by tea merchant Ting Hsu in collaboration with a small team of hardcore tea lovers in Seattle and a network of growers around the world. After 5 years of wholesale and retail experience, we are excited to introduce the finest teas to you in a whole new perspective through this online experience.

We source unique teas, and we work directly with producers. Each year, we assemble a small collection of traditional, rare and experimental tea from China, Taiwan and Japan. We look for skillfully crafted leaves from the following growing regions:

Yunnan
Yunnan is a province of China, located in the far southwest of the country, bordering Vietnam, Laos and Burma. Yunnan is situated in a mountainous area and the altitude can vary from the mountain peaks to river valleys as much as 3,000 meters (10,000 ft). Yunnan has the largest diversity of plant life in China for its subtropical climate. Yunnan has been identified as the birthplace of tea, from which, tea has been bought 52 other countries. Yunnan has everything that tea plant need to grow into its best: abundance of rainfall, long sunshine time, extreme temperature difference between day and night, and most of all, the untouched clean nature same as thousands of years ago when ancient people drank tea for the first-time. Yunnan is the best place to grow tea in the world, and perhaps, in the universe.

Wuyi Fujian
With dark and twisted leaves, Wuyi oolong teas are deep, complex, and richly roasted. Wuyi Mountain of Northwestern Fujian has the longest known tradition of oolong tea production. Grown along steep cliffs, Wuyi’s tea trees boast massive root systems, robust trunks, and towering stature at nearly 10 feet tall. From harvest to finishing roast, each step of processing was done by hand. Leaves are picked, then carried in bamboo shoulder baskets down a narrow path only wide enough for one person. At the bottom of the mountain, they are briefly spread in the sun before they were moved indoors for a long period of shade withering. The resulting 'yan-cha' (aka Rock Oolong) is known for its characteristic dark and rich roasted flavor, the result of heavy oxidation and centuries-old charcoal roasting techniques.
